Nokia takes over smartphone market, iPhone sales drop

Although it doubled market share on the smartphone segment, from 25 percent last December, the Finnish producer lost ground as far as the overall mobile phone market is concerned.

Its market share shrunk to an average 46 percent this year, from 50.1 percent at the end of 2008. However, its share peaked to 57.4 percent in March. Back to the smartphone segment, Nokia is followed by BlackBerry, with 17.4 percent of the market. iPhone, which is to be available in Romania with its new 3GS version as of July 31, had a 12.8 percent market share in May.

Other top 5 smartphone brands on the local market are HTC (7.4 percent market share) and Sony Ericsson (6.2 percent). On the overall market, Nokia is followed by Samsung, with a 18.1 percent share, and Sony Ericsson, with 17.6 percent. LG comes in fourth, with 10.8 percent, followed by Vodafone branded terminals, with 3.2 percent fo the market. Some 261,000 mobile phones were sold in Romania in May, higher compared to the 254,300 units sold in April, but less than last December’s sales, which amounted to 593,000 phones.
