“We are currently operating with no major impact of the economic crisis. The latest 2009 estimates regarding Romania’s economic growth indicate a sharp downward trend compared to 2008, which would inevitably affect our business,” said Richard Moat, CEO of Orange Romania.
Company officials indicated that the reasons for tempering growth on the Romanian market are regulations regarding the drop of roaming tariffs and network inter-connectivity prices.
“If we were to eliminate the effects of the average rate of termination and roaming tariffs, the quarterly increase of Orange Romania’s revenues would have reached 15.2 percent,” Moat told Business Standard.
The company posted €977 million in revenues in the first nine months of 2008, up 8 percent year-on-year. In the third quarter alone, the company reported €349 mln in turnover, 7 percent higher than in Q3 2007.
The number of clients registered by Orange Romania by September 30 was 10.208 million, a 9.6 percent year-on-year rise.
Orange expanded its broadband client base by 127 percent compared to Q3 2007 and currently has some 1.14 million users. According to the France Telecom report, the increase is partly due to the launch of iPhone in Romania, Slovakia, Belgium, and Switzerland.
Orange is the key brand of France Telecom, one of the world’s leading telecommunications operators. France Telecom’s revenues increased 3.4 percent, to €39.9 billion, in the first nine months of 2008, compared to the same period the year before. This rise is due to developed Western European countries (especially France, Great Britain, and Belgium), and the evolution of emerging countries – the Middle East and Romania, according to one of the company’s official statements.
