PD was followed by the largest opposition party in Romania, the Social Democrat Party (PSD) which secured 21.65 percent of all votes. The next in line were the Liberal Party (PNL) with 13.15 percent of all votes, the Liberal-Democrat Party (PLD) with 8.32 percent and the Hungarian Democratic Alliance (UDMR) with 5.84 percent.

The other eight parties which took part in the race failed to obtain 5 percent of the votes in the elections, below the electoral threshold allowing them to send their members to EU’s legislative arm.

Partial BEC results on the open-party vote referendum show almost 82 percent of the voters were in favor while some 15.68 percent were against introducing the new electoral system, in which people vote for individual candidates and not party lists.

Some 3,615,579 people took part in the referendum on the open-party vote, 25.52 percent of those who have the right to vote. Elections turnout must exceed 50 percent, for the vote to be valid.

Romania will sent 35 representatives to the European Parliament, this being the first time after the EU accession that Romanians choose their lawmakers to EU’s legislative arm.
