PC sales down 54% in Q1 2009

Last year, the ranking was dominated by Acer, Fujitsu Technologies, and Dell. Sales in Q1 2009 amounted to 121,988 units, almost half compared to the first three months in 2008, when sales amounted to 221,000 personal computers. This is the second quarterly decline for the local PC market. The first decline in the past eight years in this sector occurred in the last quarter in 2008. On the notebook market, U.S. producers Dell and Hewlett-Packard and Japanese producer Fujitsu Technologies registered a significant drop in sales. Asus went on to become top seller, with 14,960 units, 50.5 percent higher year-on-year.

Lenovo, Acer and Toshiba sales rose, with these producers outranking the former market leaders. The sharp market correction is mainly due to lower demand and lack of projects in the public system. On the other hand, Fujitsu Technologies representatives say that the market drop was sharper than Gartner estimates show, amounting to some 65 percent. “The worst decline was registered for government projects, with absolutely nothing happening in that area,” company officials said.

“Consumer and small and medium-sized enterprises segments also dropped, but not that much. Panic has led people to save money and forego buying IT products,” they added. Another explanation is that companies postponed acquisition decisions, according to Razvan Ziemba, CEO of Asesoft Distribution, a Dell distributor on the local market. According to the Gartner study, desktop sales registered slight growth in terms of volume, reaching 47.7 percent of the total PC sales, compared to 46.6 percent in 2008.
