President Traian Basescu is recovering well

Romanian President Traian Basescu who underwent thyroid surgery this morning is feeling well and recovering, spokesman Valeriu Turcan said, adding the chief of state may be released from the hospital on September 10.

Basescu was operated this morning by a team of eight doctors, among whom four surgeons, at the Military Hospital, one of the most reputed health care centers in Bucharest. The right lobe of the thyroid was removed, after doctors had found an autonomous nodule at a routine check in June.

The surgery was a routine operation and went well, according to a press release from the hospital. The removed nodule was a benign one, doctors said. The president's wife and two daughters were present at the hospital starting this morning.

The surgery is a routine operation and that usually lasts for approximately 90 minutes, doctors contacted by NewsIn said yesterday.
