The percentage of Romanians who fear unemployment amounted to 60 percent, according to a February survey by Synovate, almost double the 32 percent rate registered in a similar survey conducted last October.
Moreover, a January survey by Insomar (the National Institute for Opinion Polls and Marketing) indicates that Romanians were not expecting to be personally affected by the crisis, although the first wave of layoffs had already taken place.
The main fear of Romanians according to the Insomar survey was inflation, which made up two thirds of the responses. In the survey published yesterday by Synovate, this response belonged to 80 percent of respondents, in the case of foodstuffs and utilities.
On the whole, 56 percent of respondents said that the economic situation will worsen in the coming 12 months, and 46 percent fear an increase in taxes. About 80 percent of Romanians are certain that they will not buy a house, land, or a car in the coming 12 months, while 71 percent said they fear the depreciation of the leu against other currencies.
