The list of top players will change in the coming five years, depending on sales. This is currently made up of Metro, Rewe, Carrefour, Louis Delhaize, Schwarz, Auchan, Tengelmann and Delhaize Group, and Metro is expected to retain its leading position until 2013, followed by Carrefour. Planet Retail estimates that Metro sales in 2013 are expected to reach €4.7 billion, while those of Carrefour will amount to €3.8 bln, and Rewe €3.6 bln.
The hypermarket segment will become the main organized trade distribution channel in 2013, doubling its share to 21.5 percent from a present 10.3 percent.
“Hyper and supermarkets are present in the entire Central and Eastern European region, while discount stores have focused on Central Europe,” said Mylos Riba, Planet Retail analyst.
The French Auchan hypermarket network is expected to enjoy the most spectacular evolution, with its share to increase eight-fold, to 2.4 percent from a present 0.3 percent, according to the same report.
