Retailers say that the minimum tax could deter investments

The Finance Ministry is attempting to raise budget revenues, and is looking for ways to increase the base of taxation, instead of increasing the actual taxes. This minimum tax is targeting companies in certain fields that are not registering profits.

“The reason why this measure was proposed is somewhat justified, given that many companies are not paying income tax, but this could deter the investment policy of serious companies,” Manolache said.

“I understand that this proposal will be withdrawn, and that certain fixed, evened out amounts, set based on the turnover, will be enforced,” he added. The tax could amount to €10,000 for companies with business exceeding €30 million, he said. The First Vice President of ruling Liberal-Democratic Party (PD-L), Theodor Stolojan, confirmed for Business Standard that the measure could be replaced by fixed taxes based on turnover size. Finance Ministry representatives said that all suggestions made by employers and trade unions regarding the Fiscal Code are being analyzed and that a final version of the draft could be discussed in next week’s government meeting.
