Romania has less than 1% of the GSM world market

There are 3.3 billion users of global system for mobile communications (GSM) and code division multiple access (CDMA) services, over half of the world’s total population. Romania has a 5.5 percent Eastern European market share, where over 398 million subscriber identity module (SIM) cards are active. Compared to the whole of Europe’s population, Romanian clients make up 2.5 percent of total clients.

At the end of 2007, Romania’s three mobile phone companies Orange, Vodafone and Cosmote, reported over 22.2 million users.

The number of SIM cards in Eastern Europe is four times higher than the United States and Canada, where over 106 million clients are registered, which represents 4 percent of total number of users worldwide. CDMA technology, used in Romania by a single operator, Zapp, is much more widespread in North America than the rest of the world.
