Average social security spending amounted to 27.2 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2005. In Sweden, France and Denmark, this exceeded 30 percent of GDP, while in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Romania, funds for these expenditures made up less than 15 percent of GDP (14.2 percent in Romania).
