Romanian authorities will ask the Cabinet to solicit EC to create a solidarity fund to allow rapid interventions when natural disasters occur, the head of the European Affairs Department, Adrian Ciocanea said.
It is Romania's first request of this kind to the EC, since the country joined the bloc at the beginning of the year, Ciocanea said.
The country has been faced with severe drought this summer, following several years of floods. Summer and fall crops were damaged in many reagions, leading to an increase of prices for fruit and vegetables. Farmers countrywide blamed authorities for the lack of a coherent plan to fight the effects of the drought and to get the irrigation systems working to full capacity.
