The first place is held by India, which received 27 billion U.S. dollars from its citizens working abroad. It was followed by China (25.7 billion U.S. dollars) and Mexico (25 billion U.S. dollars.)
Romanians working abroad are expected to empty wallets into the country as 1 billion euros should enter Romania during the winter holidays, the central bank of Romania (BNR) advisor Adrian Vasilescu said in late November.
BNR posted net transfers totaling 3.9 billion euros, in the first nine months of the year. Money coming from abroad stood at 5.54 billion euros.
More than 10,000 Romanians left the country in the first three months of the year to find work abroad, according to data provided by the Office for Labor Force Migration (OMFM); as many as 85 percent went to Germany, where the average salary can reach 1,200 euros a month.
Approximately 110,000 work visas were issued to Romanians last year. The Foreign Affairs Ministry had previously said the official number of the Romanians legally living in the EU exceeds 1.2 million, with approximately 500,000 residing in Italy and 450,000 in Spain.
