The official assured the leu-euro exchange rate will not reach 4 lei per euro, in an interview given to BBC. Lazea emphasized the ones who save in lei will see the benefits of this habit next year, as they will gain from two sources: the interests and the exchange rate.

BNR is currently trying to control inflation through a series of measures taken especially within the inter-banking market. Romania witnessed a 6.57 percent inflation rate at the end of 2007, thus exceeding the 4 percent target it wanted to reach.

For the end of this year, BNR is aiming at a 3.8 percent inflation rate. Last week the leu fell to 3.78 against the euro, due to the turmoil seen on the international monetary markets.

Lazea advised people to start taking credits in the currency their salaries are paid.
