Romania’s core airports Otopeni, Baneasa will close gates during the NATO summit

He noted it is possible for the flights on the two airports to be moved to other airports in the country. The official explained this is not a last minute decision as the law requires that airlines be informed of such a move 15 days before it is implemented.

The initiative for the measure belongs to Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense. This is the best solution for the Otopeni airport, the institution’s general manager Gabriel Tara said. Stefan Mladin, the general manager of the Baneasa airport, said the decision is in the advantage of both airports.

More than 20,000 people living in Bucharest are expected to go on a mini-vacation during the NATO summit, according to the president of the Association of Tourism Agencies, Dragos Anastasiu.

Romania will host the summit for the first time since it joined NATO in 2004, making Bucharest just the third capital from the former communist bloc, after Prague in 2002 and Riga in 2006, to host a high-level meeting of one of Moscow’s greatest Cold War rivals.
