Romania second in Europe, following France, in terms of turnover per square meter on retail market
The Carrefour official said that the Romanian retail market will develop significantly in the coming years, in spite of the international economic crisis, because there are still many areas in which modern retail is unavailable. “The ratio of modern trade last year in Romania was 39 percent, while in France this was 99.6 percent, in Spain 94.3 percent, and in Germany 92 percent. We estimate that modern trade in Romania will reach a 50 percent ratio in 2010,” added Mihai.

Andreea Mihai said that the number of hypermarkets in Romania in the first quarter of 2008 rose 7.25 percent, to 74, from 69.

As concerns household appliances, Romania is quite weak, with only 86 percent of inhabitants with a refrigerator last year, 67.1 percent with washing machines, and 86.1 percent with a radio/audio system. The opposite is true of televisions, at 124.1 percent in 2007, compared to 118.5 percent year-on-year, added Mihai.
