Romania to tailor privatization strategy of power complexes to EU legislation

Atanasiu met yesterday union leaders of power complexes and told them a new approach of the sell-off strategy is required because the current one fails to comply with the treaty Romania signed when joined the European Union; also sell-off requirements need to be put in line with the stipulations of the new national power strategy approved by the government.

AVAS will analyze the country's six mining companies which remained unsold as to identify the problems each of them is facing and find the best solutions. Following the analysis, some companies will be privatized, others closed.

President Traian Basescu, Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu and other minister members of the country's Supreme Defense Council met on September 25 to iron out the country’s energy strategy for the next 13 years and Romania’s role within the regional context.

The Cabinet approved at the beginning of September the country’s energy strategy which includes the set up of a state-owned company to control hydro, thermal and nuclear power producers, plus the last three electricity distribution companies which have not been sold yet.
