Sales of Carrefour Romania surged 29 percent year-on-year, to €370 million, in last year’s fourth quarter, although Romania was beginning to feel the effects of the international crisis - mainly layoffs, suspended production of certain enterprises, and the sharp drop in durable goods (auto and real estate) consumption.
“In spite of a hostile economic environment, Carrefour posted a solid rise in sales in 2008, especially on emerging markets,” said the French group’s General Manager, Lars Olofsson, who is optimistic about the company’s future. “Carrefour must improve its results. I am fully confident that our resources and financial strength will allow us to overcome future challenges,” Olofsson added.
On a total market estimated at €40 bln, Carrefour’s competitors include Auchan, Cora, Real, Pic, and Kaufland on the hypermarket segment, and Billa, Mega Image, Interex, and Spar on the supermarket segment.
