Romanian PM wants another eye-to-eye meeting with the president over justice issue
Tariceanu said he maintains his stand point after reviewing Nicolai's file tracing down her career line and expressed disappointment that the president chose to make personal use of this file in such a communist-like manner.

The PM appealed to the president to analyze together Nicolai's political and professional becoming in a “detached and objective way,” Tariceanu said.

President Basescu denied last week the justice helm to Liberal Senator Norica Nicolai invoking misconduct in Parliament last year and negative public image. He also disclosed her past behavior by revealing the mentioned file to justify his refusal.

Tariceanu underlined that the files are for their owners to read only as it was established by the Superior Magistracy Council. Before the revolution, communists used to keep these files on everyone as a tool of oppression and terror, revealing mistakes from the past when least expected, Tariceanu explained.

In her turn, Norica Nicolai dismissed the president's accusations regarding her past professional errors saying she has nothing to reproach herself and that she never begged for the ministry position.

Yesterday the premier proposed Defense Minister Melescanu to act as interim at the Justice Ministry until things are ironed out. Basescu agreed. Melescanu remains defense minister too.

Romania, a new member of the European Union, is carefully monitored by the European Commission on the path to reform the judiciary, after it had promised to do so and fight corruption during its accession negotiations.
