Romanian President Basescu takes a stance for education, angles to reform system by 2013

Present at the symposium “Romania of education. Romania of research. Quality in education, excellence in research – a  perspective of the Parliament,” Basescu expressed his worries that concern over education could be “seasonal,” something which occurs only before elections. The president underlined the necessity of reforming the system gradually in the next five years.

The budget for education should be of at least 6 percent and minimum 1 percent for research in the mentioned period, Basescu said. “The amounts are minimum if we want a competitive country.” The European Union recommends allotments of 8 to 10 percent for the following five years, he added.

Basescu angles to complete the pact for education by spring. He underlined the issue of decentralization, saying that “the money should follow the student.” Also, he talked about the necessity to elaborate a statute of the student and a charter to define rights and liberties in education.
