According to Mladin, this year’s first quarter brought an 18 percent increase in traffic for Aurel Vlaicu Airport, and business growth rate estimates for 2009 remain unchanged. “Despite the crisis, we hope to register a 20-25 percent increase in traffic at Baneasa this year. The same growth rate could be posted in terms of turnover,” the company official told Business Standard.
Mladin added that some 40,000 passengers were registered during the Easter holidays alone, up 30 percent year-on-year. Companies operating out of Aurel Vlaica with the highest number of passengers are Blue Air, Wizz Air, MyAir, SkyEurope, and Germanwings.
Regarding the modernization of the airport, the manager said that he will have a meeting with the Minister of Transportation, Radu Berceanu, to discuss the construction of the new terminal. “The airport could become a special one. I believe Bucharest needs a city airport and Baneasa meets all the requirements. Further financing is needed,” Mladin added.
