Romanians’ purchasing power is declining purchasing

The annual growth pace of salary earnings slowed in September to 4.9 percent from 5.6 percent in August, slightly below the annual consumer price index, of 4.94 percent in September, so the purchasing power of Romanian employees declined over the past year.

The gross average salary earnings were RON 1,860 (€439) in the ninth month of this year, up 0.8 percent month-on-month. Compared to October 1990, the purchasing power of the average salary earnings was 23.2 percent higher in September 2009.

INS indicates that in the best-paid activity ranking, “financial brokerage and air transportation surrendered the first place to the raw oil and natural gas extraction industry, registering a gross level of RON 5,068 [some €1,178] per employee, on average.”
