Together, the two companies have 96.6 percent of total subscribers, both individuals and corporate, according to a report by the National Regulatory Authority for Communications and Information Technology.
Romelecom, the former state-owned operator, is currently controlled by Greek OTE group. RCS&RDS started out as a cable TV service company, but expanded onto the internet and phone services markets.
Some 4.26 million landline phone lines were registered in Romania by the end of 2007, 60,000 more compared than in 2006, and a total 3.86 million subscribers, idle compared to 2006.
Romtelecom operated 71.3 percent of the fixed phone lines - 3.03 million lines for 2.73 million subscribers. Other operators had 28.7 percent of the market, of 1.222 million lines for 1.13 million subscribers. RCS&RDS had 1 million subscribers. Another significant operator, UPC, had a further 112,000 subscribers.
