Sorin Oprescu’s win of Bucharest City Hall confirmed by partial BEC results
The victory of Independent Sorin Oprescu, who split from former Social Democratic Party (PSD) shortly before the first round of local elections, has been confirmed as new Mayor of Bucharest City Hall, according to preliminary results posted by the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC).

As such, Oprescu received 56.31 percent of the votes, while Democratic Party rival, Vasile Blaga, obtained only 43.68 percent.

Nationwide, BEC announced that PSD managed to win 472 mayoral seats, 40 more than the Democratic Liberal Party’s (PD-L) 432 seats, while the National Liberal Party (PNL) has 348.

In Bucharest, Andrei Chiliman (PNL) has been elected to stay on in Sector 1, as have Marian Vanghelie (PSD) in Sector 5, and Cristian Poteras (PD-L) in Sector 6. Cristian Popescu-Piedone of the Conservative Party (PC) becomes Mayor of Sector 4. The Mayors of Sectors 2 and 3 won reconfirmation of their seats in the first round, namely Nicolae Ontanu (PSD) and Liviu Negoita (PD-L).

The New Generation – Christian Democratic Party (PNG-CD), led by Gigi Becali, registered victory in 33 localities, while radical Corneliu Vadim Tudor’s Greater Romania Party (PRM) won mayoral seats in 15 towns.
