There were over 2.5 million unemployed people in Spain in August, of which 500,000 were foreigners. However, Spain will continue to recruit specialized workers, but based on international conventions.
According to statistics from the Spanish Labor Ministry, between January and July 2008, 88,180 foreign workers were recruited in their homeland to come and work to Spain.
Spain has signed recruitment agreements with Romania, Poland, Bulgaria, Colombia, Ecuador, Dominican Republic and Morocco, among others. There are 750,000 Romanians officially registered in Spain, but the real number is estimated at over 1 million. The Spanish economy is currently undergoing recession, leading to a higher unemployment rate.
