Carrefour and Metro are the top hypermarkets, with 7 percent of respondents saying they prefer to shop there, followed by Billa, at 6 percent, Artima (4 percent) and Kaufland (3 percent). The 1,000 study respondents live in both urban and rural areas and the study included all retail units, from hypermarkets and supermarkets to local stores.
According to GfK, a similar study was made in Croatia, where the retail market is more consolidated. In that country, local store chain Konzum ranks first, at 31 percent, followed by Billa (9 percent) and Kaufland (9 percent). "Local retailers are very well positioned in other countries in the region, except Romania and Bulgaria, where the domination of international chains is obvious," according to GfK Romania's General Manager, Andi Dumitrescu.
