The President of the Metarom Federation of Steel Workers, Mircea Scintei, explained that temporary layoff is an option that employers find handy in times of crisis, when orders are dropping, but that the situation will worsen in the spring. “We now have the option of temporary layoffs but if this situation persists, permanent layoffs are sure to follow. In March-April, the effects of the crisis will be significant and we are in constant contact with European trade unions to try to find solutions,” Scintei added.
“The current situation on the job market is grey and will worsen in 2009. In February we will know who can and cannot overcome the crisis, and many companies will either shut down or reorganize, leading to a high number of layoffs,” said Magda Volonciu, labor legislation specialist.
