The business of Greek banking groups four times more profitable

The National Bank of Greece, one of the top Greek players, which owns one of the most aggressive second-tier Romanian banks, Banca Romaneasca, and a share package of Credit Europe Bank Romania, following an agreement with the Fiba group, could announce a net profit for the whole group worth €385 mln for the first quarter of activity, according to estimates by Credit Suisse experts.

Alpha Bank, majority shareholder of one of Romania’s top ten banks in terms of assets in 2007, Alpha Bank Romania, could report a net profit today for Q1 2008 worth €202 mln, up 16 percent, compared to net results in the same period last year, according to reporter.gr press agency. Its gross profit in 2007 amounted to €37.9 mln, and it plans to expand its network to 380 units by the end of 2010, from 125 at the end of 2007.

Piraeus Bank, the fourth-largest Greek bank in terms of assets, posted a seven-fold increase in earnings for its Romanian branch, Piraeus Bank Romania, in Q1 2008, to €12.5 mln, compared to the same period in 2007.

Bankpost, a Romanian branch of the Greek EFG Eurobank group, fifth in terms of assets at the end of 2007, posted a six-fold increase in profit, to €10.6 mln.
