Basescu’s choice is Liviu Negoita, to build a government centered on the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL), while Geoana and Antonescu said they support independent Klaus Johannis, Mayor of Sibiu.
But, no matter who the Prime Minister will be, the terms of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) demand sacrifices, with expense cuts representing 10 percent of the 2010 budget. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the analysis division of The Economist group, if the new government implements in its entirety the program agreed upon with IMF, it will probably become embroiled in conflict with trade unions in the public sector, and there is a risk of serious social problems.”
EIU is also considering the possibility that, regardless of the political structure of the new government, there are doubts whether it will apply the harsh adjustment measures for the public sector, including the cut in salary-related expenses and the pension reform, requested by the IMF.
