The government restructures its IT&C agency
The new institution is to be led by Liviu Nistoran, former ANRCTI President.
ANC regulates a market estimated to be worth €5 million in 2008, including players with revenue in excess of €1 billion, such as telecom operators Orange Romania and Vodafone Romania.

The restructuring comes after the previous ANRCTI head, Dan Georgescu, appealed his dismissal by the Prime Minister in court. Bucharest’s Court of Appeal had ruled that Georgescu’s dismissal and Nistoran’s appointment as ANRCTI President be suspended.

The government’s decision to restructure the IT&C agency has raised the concern of the European Commission (EC). EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media, Viviane Reding, demanded an explanation for the ANRCTI restructuring and Georgescu’s dismissal. She told Communications Minister Karoly Borbely that the independence of the national regulatory authority is supported by the regulations of the EC’s telecom framework.
