The leu returns to its January level

Over the past few days, the national currency returned to an appreciation trend, since Romania decided to sign a financing agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the European Commission (EC), and other international financial institutions. On Friday, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) posted a RON 4.1893/€1 exchange rate, after an appreciation by over RON 0.03 (0.72 percent) of the leu compared to its level the day before.

This is the best position the leu has had in the past three months. A better exchange rate was posted on 8 January, when the leu was set by the central bank at 4.1385.

Moreover, the national currency continued to appreciate on the interbank foreign currency market even after the central bank set the benchmark exchange rate. Thus, the market ended last week within the 4.15-4.17 range, meaning that buyers offered RON 4.15 for €1 while sellers demanded some RON 4.17 for €1.

Other currencies in the region (the Hungarian forint, the Polish zloty, and the Czech koruna) registered a similar trend.

According to a survey by Reuters, quoted by the NewsIn agency, the leu-euro exchange rate will increase significantly by summer, up to RON 4.37/€1.
