The liquidity of banks could be affected if SME loan payments are suspended for one year

“This is a measure that should be discussed with all ARB members, because we need to quantify its impact on the provisions and liquidity of banks,” the Chief Economist of Raiffeisen Bank, Ionuţ Dumitru, told Business Standard. He said that the measure will have a positive effect on provisions and a negative one on liquidity.

“Banks focus on cash flow, which will be affected by such a measure. The effect must be very clearly quantified, so that banks do not fall below the minimum liquidity threshold imposed by BNR regulations,” Dumitru said.

Nicolae Cinteza, Head of BNR’s Surveillance Division, said that banks are already restructuring the loans of clients who have difficulties paying their installments. “We want banks to be partners rather than judges of viable clients. The banks are not interested in guarantees, but rather in money, because money was what they gave their clients,” Cinteza said.
