The lowest hourly income in Romania: €1.17 in HoReCa

Romanian employees in the HoReCa field earn almost ten times less than such workers in Western Europe, where the average is of some €10-11 per hour, in countries such as Italy, Spain, and Ireland.

“I believe that the main reason is the high job demand and the limited supply. It is known that, in general, average wages in this industry are not high, because employees do not need to be very specialized,” said Dina Litzica, PR&Marketing Manager of the JW Marriott hotel, leader of the local five-star hotel market.

According to the Marriott official, employers invest a lot in training, to raise the value of their employees. Litzica said that JW Marriott maintained the number of employees constant compared to last year, in spite of the economic downturn. “It is a big mistake to let leave an employee in whom you have invested and who you raised to a high level of training,” Litzica said.

Workers in the coke and oil processing industry are the best paid, at more than RON 25 (some €5.83) per hour.
