The company's business soared by 12 percent year-on-year, to €423.78 mln in the first nine months of 2007. Some 66.3 million passengers travelled by train in the January-September 2007 period, a level similar to that registered in the first nine months of 2006.
"The most profitable destinations are Cluj, Brasov, Iasi, Suceava, Timisoara, Sibiu, Constanta, and seaside and mountain resorts depending on the season," said Alexandru Noaptes, General Manager of CFR Calatori.
According to Noaptes, €121.39 mln was allocated to CFR Calatori from the state budget for 2007, of which 43 percent have already been invested. Cornelia Bolina, spokeswoman for CFR, indicated that the company will continue to modernize 12 electrical train engines and 18 hydraulic train engines, all part of the anti-pollution program.
Company officials recently said that CFR might purchase Bombardier trains with hybrid, electrical and diesel propulsion systems in the coming two years, and that Romanian companies may participate in their construction.
