Training: Poor program selection leads to lack of results

Training is a sensitive issue, given the significance it has in improving an organization’s work. Training companies encounter various perceptions on training and its necessity.

“Many organizations acknowledge the need for training, but they do not know why and to what effects, thus choosing courses that are not entirely appropriate for a certain cause of defective functioning,” Codecs President, Catalin Ionescu, told Business Standard. Codecs is trying to find the causes and to recommend the best program for an improved functioning, but there are people who cannot be convinced and who take the wrong courses, with results taking time to show, he added.

Another issue is the participants’ reserve to these programs. “People might feel offended when the company they work for organizes courses for improving their activity, they feel inferior and not appreciated; sales are the most difficult domain from this point of view,” said Ionescu.

If interviewed, some 90 percent of training participants could fairly say the program was useless. But, since training costs are quite high, representing direct investment in company staff and strategy, few voices would actually say “it was useless”. However, Codecs studies show that approximately 90 percent of those who participate in training programs see results and the company activity has improved.

Codecs has five divisions - a Business School, with estimated turnover for 2007 of some €3 three million, Project Management with estimated €800,000 worth of business for 2007, Codecs Publishing House (€150,000), and the Training&Consultancy division, which represents some 12 percent of the company and would have business for 2007 of €870,000. Codecs established the fifth division this September, and the company estimates to have €80,000 worth of business by year-end.

Codecs Training&Consultancy reported an influx of €500,000 for 2006, after a 2005 inflow of €300,000, according to the company’s official. Codecs has 25 shareholders.
