Unjustified wage differences for managers with the similar positions

“Retail logistics managers have incomes higher than managers with similar positions in other industries, while food fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) employers pay wages twice as high as those for sales and marketing managers in non-food FMCG,” said Irina Vasile, Managing Director of the Antal International. According to Vasile, the differences in salary packages of employees in similar positions can be explained by the fact that there is no wage grid which would include the minimum number of years of experience or a standard prfile of a manager in each industry, based on qualifications, years of experience, and results obtained. Jobs are not aligned to market standards, and in some companies chaotic human resource management predominates, driven by the preferences of each employer.

“Company management is carried out without the use of any clear professional criteria or professional benchmark based on the position or industry. Resource management is based on everyone finding the manager who appears suited to his company,” added Vasile. The average annual salary for a Logistics Manager is €43,300, while Marketing Managers make approximately €51,000 a year. “This year, the growth of logistics positions was between 9 and 25 percent, with this department third in terms of wage increases. Among those who enjoyed substantial hikes in income this year are sales employees – 16 percent, and management – 14 percent,” said Oana Botolan Datki, Country Manager of Consulteam HR consulting and recruiting company. The Antal study shows that the average salary of a CFO is €53,000 a year, although there are exceptions in some companies, where the same position fetches an annual €70,000. Such disparities exist also in wages for chief executive officers (CEO), of between €89,500 and €240,000 annually. “A €240,000 annual salary is an exception and does not reflect the reality of the market. Few companies can afford to pay such salaries. Unfortunately, only in sales is there some semblance of balance, compared to other positions, with incomes from sales not much different from one company to another,” added Irina Vasile.

Alexandru Talmazan, Managing Partner of the Wrightson Romania executive search firm, salary rises in the past two years are absurd.
