US Senate drive’s Romania’s currency to its lowest level in 2008

“I think BNR could intervene at 3.85 lei per euro. There are strong pressures for leu depreciation, since Romania is perceived as a risky country,” said ING Bank senior economist Nicolaie Alexandru-Chidesciuc.

The national currency negative evolution happened as the US Senate decided to approve the €700 billion Paulson Plan. The vote devaluated the US dollar and the NY Stock Exchange dropped. In Europe, stock exchanges increased, a trend reflected in Bucharest.
