Petrom continues to be the top company on the local market, with turnover worth €4.548 billion in 2008 and net profit of €277.6 million, albeit much lower than in 2007 when this was almost double, at €532.8 mln. Compared to the list of largest local companies in 2007, Rompetrol Rafinare, owned by the Kazakh state-owned KazMunaiGaz, advanced to second place, compared to fourth a year earlier. The administrator of the Petromidia refinery posted turnover in 2007 worth €1.627 bln and losses of €94.2 mln. Rompetrol Rafinare thus becomes the second-largest company in the economy, registering turnover of €2.352 billion, with losses widening by €126.2 mln.

Interbrands was subject to the most spectacular decline of the top ten “billionaires” in 2007, existing the classification in which it previously held 10th place. According to information reported by the distributor and published on the site of the Ministry of Finance, Interbrands had turnover in 2008 worth €216 million, down some 80 percent year-on-year, when net sales amounted to €1.071 billion. The Petrotel LukOil refinery has become one of the top companies in 2008, with turnover worth €1.301 billion.

The IT&C market leader, Orange Romania, maintains its eighth place, with €1.27 billion in turnover and a net profit of €437.6 million, followed by Vodafone, with net sales of €1.18 billion and €306.4 mln net profit. Third place goes to Romtelecom, with turnover in 2008 worth €844.5 mln and profit of €1.07 mln. According to data published by the OTE group, of which Romtelecom is a part, the company accumulated revenue in 2008 worth €869.8 mln, with operational losses rising to €36.2 mln.

The business of Romania’s steel producer, ArcelorMittal, dropped in 2008 to €1.947 bln, compared €2.082 bln in 2007, although profit rose by over 68 percent to €164.2 mln, from €97.3 mln in 2007.
