Wine producers forced to undersell abroad owing to lack of reputation of Romanian soys

Romanian wine is not backed up by any brand and the fact affects exports, according to wine producer Murfatlar's marketing manager, Radu Morar. Murfatlar produced 14.5 million liters of wine this year out of which 20 percent was exported to U.S., Israel, Finland, Germany, Italy, UK and Spain.

“Romanian wines are currently attempting to create an identity but it takes time,” Cotnari producer board president Constantin Deleanu said.

The priority markets this year were the U.S. and China which is the biggest market worldwide. Exports to Israel, Finland, Germany and UK also rose compared to last year. Murfatlar's exports increased seven percentage points over the past two years.

Wine maker Cotnari produced some 8 million liters of wine this year of which 10 percent were exported.

Romania is the fifth wine producer country in Europe. Last year Romania exported 181,000 hectoliters of wine, dropping from 269,600 hectoliters in 2005.
