Xerox: 80% of recruitments are internal promotions

“The first thing we do when we have a job vacancy is to announce this through an e-mail to all employees. This contains the job description, and the candidate profile (competences and abilities),” said Simona Simion-Popescu, Human Resource Manager of Xerox Romania.

Promotion is one of the most effective tools for retaining employees, considering most companies face major personnel fluctuation, according to Simona Simion-Popescu. Within Xerox, the candidate list is open to all employees, even for management positions. For most jobs, the company does not require previous experience in a similar position.

“Employees are periodically evaluated, so we know whether they have the necessary skills for the vacancy. For key positions, especially managerial ones, we approach potential candidates directly,” Xerox’s Human Resource Manager added.

The local subsidiary of the multinational company has allocated €2,400 for the training of all employees in 2006, about 30 times more than the average for Romanian companies. According to the “Romanian HR Profile 2007” study, carried out by the Corporate Dynamics training company, in collaboration with Business-Edu, the average local company training budget per employee amounts to an annual €87.

Operational entry-level positions are the only ones involving hiring exclusively from outside the company. Xerox Romania is currently hiring more then 80 processing operators from the market, to cover personnel needed for its new scanning and archiving center opened in mid-October. In 2008, the company intends to work on a development program called “Talent Academy,” to centralize all development needs of employees with promotion potential.

Work abroad
Promotions can also involve working in other Xerox offices around the world. At present, there are seven Romanian managers working abroad, or assigned regional responsibilities. Of these, the most important position is held by Dana Untescu, Regional HR Manager for Central and Eastern Europe.
