Yahoo! puts Romania on stand-by

In May 2008, Darren Patterson, Head of Community of Yahoo! Europe, told Business Standard that “in the third quarter of 2008, the portal will have content in Romanian,” and the company plans to sign partnerships with local publishers to develop this content. Nine months later, the yahoo.ro internet address still directs users toward the main page of Yahoo! United Kingdom, and Yahoo! officials decline to offer any explanation on this matter.

“The global economic environment is affecting all companies, everybody, and, unfortunately, Yahoo! was no exception. I cannot make public financial results or announce the date of the launch of the product. In any case, I want to assure you that we are permanently looking for new opportunities on global markets,” said Zhengxi Danard, Product Marketing Manager of Yahoo! for Eastern Europe.

In November 2008, Marvin Liao, Director of Sales Development Yahoo! Emerging Markets, told Business Standard that Romania is a market which is developing at a rapid pace and “it would be a mistake on our part not to do something about this.”
