The 14 mandatory private pension funds registered a 6.96 percent weighted average return on investment in 2008, higher than the inflation rate in the same period, estimated at 4-4.5 percent, according to APAPR. The report indicates a real average yield of 2.4-2.8 percent. The rate of return of funds was measured in the 20 May-31 December 2008 period, since the first contributions were collected until the last day of 2008.
APAPR said that Romanian funds registered the best evolution in Central and Eastern Europe, “despite the context of profound financial crisis”, unlike the Polish, Hungarian, Croatian and Slovakian markets, where pension funds registered negative results.
