A Bucharest private medical practice posts €165,000 turnover in 2008

“If we are talking about specialized physicians, for example obstetrics-gynaecology practices, revenues are high, especially if they do in vitro fertilization. Even if these revenues seem substantial, they are far below the European average, where a specialized physician earns between €250,000-300,000 a year,” Vasile Astarastoaie, President of the College of Physicians in Romania, told Business Standard. Most individual practices are owned by family physicians who, according to Astarastoaie, registered an average monthly income of RON 1,800 last year (€489, computed at an average RON 3.6827/€1exchange rate).

According to the data provided by Bucharest’s General Bureau of Public Finance, the top ten most profitable private medical practices posted total net revenues in excess of €1 million last year.

The deficit of specialized physicians in Romania exceeds 20 percent, or 2,117 doctors. The state health system is underfinanced, receiving three percent of gross domestic product (GDP), compared to the average eight percent of GDP in the European Union.
