Annual imports of special alloys worth €1 bln

Imports of special alloys amount to some 40,000 tons annually and are worth about €1 billion, according to industry representatives for Business Standard.

These alloys are used for nuclear, aeronautic and auto industry parts production. Of the total imports, some 5,000 tons are high purity special alloys.

Prices for alloys vary between €12 per kilogram for special steel products and more than €30 for high purity alloys.

Industry officials expect the imports to increase in the coming years. “The aeronautic and metallurgy industries are reviving, many energy companies, especially from Asia, are considering significant investments in Romania, while [U.S. car maker] Ford’s coming to Craiova will attract several car parts producers,” said the President of Pro Auto Industries, Laurentiu Tigau. The company owns a steel plant for special alloys, but will only begin production as of next year.
