Crisis draws back Romania’s economic progress

The financial crisis could set Romania two years back, should the estimates by the National Prognosis Commission (CNP) confirm. In the current forecast, published Monday, the GDP is estimated to amount to €216.8 bln in 2013, the level of the initial estimate for 2011.

CNP based its last year forecast on a strengthening of the leu against the euro, from 3.6 in 2009 to 3.3 in 2010. However, now the leu is expected to depreciate, to a RON 4.31/€1 in 2013 from an average RON 4/€1 in 2009.
