Czech food producer Hame buys local factory

Antrefrig’s production is to be relocated from the Bucharest unit to the town of Caracal, where Hame has opened a pate production unit this spring, according to Hame’s President, Leos Novotny (photo), for Czech publication Hospodarske noviny, quoted by CTK. Novotny declined to make public the purchase price. Before the closing of the edition, Hame did not comment on the information.

Meanwhile, Novotny told the Czech publication that Hame also plans to buy Scandia Sibiu, leader on the Romanian canned meat market. “Scandia Sibiu’s owners made us a sell-buy offer, but they gave up. However, we will not discard the idea” of buying Scandia Sibiu, said Hame’s president.

According to sources close to the two companies, the value of Antrefrig’s assets, including the land owned by the company, amounts to €30-40 million. The same sources say it is very likely that only the machinery have been sold, but not the lands, considering that the Lebanese owners are involved in real businesses.

The value of the Romanian canned meat market is estimated at some €55 mln, according to market data. Main pate producers are Scandia Sibiu, Orkla Foods, Hame, Mandy Foods, and Antrefrig, which together own 85.2 percent of this market, according to a study made by ACNielsen, the world’s leading marketing information company.

Consumption
Romanians prefer pork pates (76.5 percent), followed by poultry pates (15.7 percent).
