UTI Group and City Hall signed a contract yesterday for the NetCity metropolitan subterranean cable network project, involving the installation of a 47 km main fiber optic distribution network and a 1,000 km branch circuit network.
The signed contract is now subject to approval by Bucharest’s Municipal Council, and relevant annexes to the contract will be signed in the coming days.
The metropolitan network involves the underground burial of all cables, the mounting of supplementary cables to be leased by operators who want to provide telecommunications services in certain areas, the installation of road traffic control devices, emergency alarms for notification of the general population, and connectivity between Bucharest City Hall, sector City Halls, and their subordinate units.
Bucharest City Hall justifies this project by explaining that this will lead to a more attractive landscape, and that “a lack of regulation in this area has lead to chaotic and uncontrolled development of telecommunications networks.”
The project, worth an estimated €200 million, was won by UTI Systems, the only company which presented itself at the auction.
