Dacia had announced in September (before the economic crisis) some €2.6 billion in turnover in 2008, compared to the €2.15 bln registered in 2007. Growth was mainly due to an increase in production at its Mioveni-based plant.
The company will stop production from 20 November to 7 December, due to the current situation on auto markets, especially in Romania, the firm’s main market.
“Considering there is a risk that this situation will continue, Dacia will stop production in order not to increase its stocks,” according to an official statement by Dacia.
Employees who will not be working in this period will be paid 85 percent of their total gross salary.
The Romanian car market is estimated to have dropped by an annual 30 percent in October 2008, according to company officials. In the same period, the auto market dropped 40 percent in Spain, 23 percent in the United Kingdom, 22.7 percent in Sweden, 18.9 percent in Italy, 8 percent in Germany, and 6.2 percent in France.
Dacia representatives said that the sharp drop in sales on the company’s main markets led to a downward revision of the firm’s sales and production estimates, even though Dacia’s exports rose by one fifth year-on-year in October 2008.
