Oracle: Long-awaited public projects to decline this year

The IT market is not set to increase as much as in previous years, due to the international financial crisis.

However, Mindrutescu, who runs the local branch of one of the top business software producers worldwide, told Business Standard that he believes “budget cuts will be made on this segment due to social pressures, on pensions, for instance.” Pensions are set to increase this year, and a minimum pension worth RON 350 (€82) is to be set.

In the 2007-2008 fiscal year, the public segment made up 40 percent of Oracle Romania’s sales volume on the IT infrastructure segment, according to company representatives. In the final months of 2008, Oracle signed for a further major project in the public sector, although Mindrutescu declined to provide details.
He added that the public sector is crucial for the IT industry. “In my view, the first thing the government should do is to carry on with such projects, Mîndrutescu added.

Oracle’s main competitors locally are SAP and Siveco Romania.
