Roland Berger: 50% of large local companies are expecting to exit recession in 1-2 years

Only eight percent of the top local managers hope to overcome the difficult market conditions in the coming six months.

“There are some sectors which will be sharply affected by the crisis in 2009, but these will bounce back as of 2010. This V-evolution is likely for the auto, pharmaceutical, medical service, and telecommunication sectors. For other industries, the adjustment period will take more than one year, and sectors such as metallurgy, construction, heavy industry, and the chemical industry will follow a U-model,” Codrut Pascu, Managing Partner of Roland Berger Romania, told Business Standard.

According to the company official, the real estate sector, whose evolution will be L-shaped, will register the slowest rebound and the most dramatic leveling off. Things are expected to worsen in the telecom and auto industries in the near future.

“The sudden leap from a 20 percent increase in certain sectors in the local economy to a 20 percent drop in 2009 explains the fact that Romanian managers are among the most pessimistic in Central and Eastern Europe. In other economies in the region, the landing was not so hard, as they went from 10 percent growth at most to a 10 percent decline,” said Pascu.

Companies experiencing this sudden downturn must change their strategy and operations, according to the Romanian consultant. If until 2008 these companies focussed on massive recruitment, and their entire structures were oriented towards sales, now the focus is on efficiency, quality, and client relations.
