Romania’s trade deficit up by 65.2% in H1 because of massive imports

The country’s trade deficit widened to 9.66 billion euros, on a 35 percent increase in imports coming from the EU countries. The widening of the trade deficit accelerated in the sixth month of the year against the previous five, when a 7.62 billion euros trade deficit was reported.

Romania’s exports totalled some 2.5 billion euros in June, up 9.2 percent against June 2006. Total imports in the first half of the year stood at 4.25 billion euros, up by 22.2 % against the same period last year.

Exports to EU members went up 15.2 percent against the first six months of 2006, to 1.83 billion euros. The country’s exports to non-EU members went down 4.7 percent year-on-year in June, to 656.6 million euros.
